New Pageant Queen Chats With BOSSIP

The woman who was crowned Miss USA earlier this week said she has big plans – specifically for black women and girls.

Kara McCullough said she hopes to use her time in the spotlight to empower females – and especially women of color and show the world “where my heart is.”

“Being an African- American woman, yes, we are outliers in a sense,” McCullough told BOSSIP Tuesday during a visit to the Empire State Building’s observatory.

“And I want young women to know that your hair is beautiful. Melanin is beautiful.”

She added: “You can’t allow any external factors to define you, and I want women everywhere to know – especially African-American women – don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are inadequate.”

McCollugh, who came under fire for saying that her healthcare was a privilege during the pageant, said she’ll be using her platform to promote STEM enrichment for children, and that includes showing students the career opportunities that careers in math and science can offer.

“I want them to understand that no matter where you come from, hardships you went through, obstacles, if you always believe in yourself and keep your face forward, you can make your way out of any situation.”
