BOSSIP Exclusive: Chris Brown – Blasts Songwriter Accusing Him Of Stealing Her Music For Hit “Don’t Wake Me Up”

Chris Brown Says He Didn’t Steal Hit Tune “Don’t Wake Me Up”

Chris Brown is blasting the songwriter who accused him of stealing her music for his hit song “Don’t Wake Me Up,” explaining he never even heard of the woman or her track, and is demanding her lawsuit be thrown out of court.

Earlier this year, Nayeri Gregor aka Nayri filed a federal lawsuit against Chris Brown, Sony Music and Benny Banassi accusing them of stealing her music.

Gregor explained that back in 2009 she wrote and recorded a song entitled “Don’t Wake Me Up.”

Then in 2011, she met a man named Brian Kennedy through a publicist friend. Her friend told Kennedy that she was a great songwriter and she played for him that night. He liked the music so much he set up a meeting with her at a later date.

Gregor explained that she created a playlist of her work to bring to the meeting which included the song “Don’t Wake Me Up.” She said that at the meeting he placed her CD into his computer and he said, “Don’t worry, I’m not downloading it.”

However, she said Kennedy failed to inform her that he could hear a song once and remember everything from the melodies to the scales after one listen. She claimed he not only downloaded the music she played for him at the meeting but memorized it with his ability to recall melodies.

She said that Kennedy praised her music at the meeting … despite him knowingly full well he was never going to call her again or compensate her for her work. Gregor says she never heard from Kennedy again following their meeting about her work.

Kennedy then played her song for Chris Brown and Benny Banassi, and Brown recorded the tune and released on his 2012 album “Fortune,” and even copyrighted it.

Gregor explained her song and Brown’s song share identical titles, similar lyrics, both begin with spoken words by a female voice and the hook lyrics are identical along with both songs have the same rhythmical figure and overall beat. She sued Kennedy, Brown and Banassi demanding $150,000 for each infringement along with other damages for their alleged music theft.

Then on October 30th, Brown fired back at the songwriters legal battle blasting the allegations he stole music. The singer said all the claims that he took Grego’s track and used it for his own are lies. Brown does admit that the songs have the same title and use the lyric, “Don’t Wake Me Up.” However, he explains the title and the lyric cannot be copyrighted due to them being so common.

Brown said he did not steal anything and the woman’s lawsuit is a bunch of nonsense. He added that the woman also waited to long to even file a lawsuit accusing him of copyright infringement.

The singer even told the court that he never heard the songwriter’s track or even have access to hear it if he wanted. He says he did not wrong and never acted improper when creating his single.

Brown is demanding the entire lawsuit be thrown out and the woman awarded nothing from her complaint.

Celebrity Merch Done Right

Let’s be honest — just because you’re a popular celebrity with hit song or social media influencer with a popular saying, doesn’t mean that merch is cool enough for fans to spend their hard earned coins on it. Besides, some of the stuff that famous folks pass off as merch is downright insulting, or just lame.

But for every wack piece of merch, there’s a fire one selling out like hot cakes. Seeing celebs and listening to their music is damn near free now, so it’s only right that we support their products — the good, relatable, funny stuff at least. Like Keke Palmer‘s “Sorry To This Man” T-Shirts! We could all use one of those.

There are very few examples of celebrities merch being just right. Something that’s dope, creative, archival and inspirational to the consumer in some way. Hit the flip for all the times celebs got it right when it comes to their merch.

Beyoncé’s Trademark Dispute Over “Blue Ivy Carter” Intensifies, Calls Carter Child A ‘Cultural Icon’

Beyoncée’s Trademark Dispute Over “Blue Ivy” Intensifies As The Situation Heads To Court

Blue Ivy is already 7 years old–the most popular 7-year-old on the planet, at that–but there is still a dispute over whether or not her parents should be granted the trademark over her name. If you polled everyone in America, fans or not, a majority of them would agree that Beyonce and Jay-Z should be able to trademark the name they made so famous. But according to wedding planner Veronica Morales, that just doesn’t cut it.

Since early 2017, Morales and The Carters have been at war over the trademark. At the beginning of 2018, Morales publicly stated that Beyonce could buy the trademark and her company for $10,000,000. Morales owns a wedding planning & event company named “Blue Ivy,” which was created and launched 3 years before Blue Ivy Carter was born. Morales’ claim is that consumers would somehow be confused and mistake the most popular 7-year-old in the world for her business.

It seems like the Queen Bey has had enough of this legal dispute as this case is finally headed to court. If you know anything about the Carters and how they handle their business, then you already know they’ve went to every length possible to try and handle this in private.

According to The Blast, two of Beyonce’s main arguments in this case are:

1. Morales runs a “small business, with just three regional offices and a handful of employees”, with weak online presence and poorly subscribed social media accounts.

2. “Blue Ivy Carter is a cultural icon who has been described as a ‘mini style star’ and has been celebrated for her ‘fashion moments’ over the years. Her life and activities are followed extensively by the media and the public.”

This dispute has been ongoing for years now and it’s surprising that Morales even thinks she has a case. Even more surprising is the fact that nobody on her legal team nor personal friends have pulled her aside and asked, “REALLY?!?

” Imagine being read by Beyonce in legal documents where she calls out your lack of online presence and small infrastructure. I’d rather just let the Carters prosper with the trademark and ask for that coveted invite to the Roc Nation Brunch and some Made In America tickets instead—but nope, Morales wants to be difficult.

See ya in court!

Hip-Hop mogul Dame Dash tried to cash in on the new wave of blockchain-based sales by auctioning off Jay-Z’s groundbreaking debut album “Reasonable Doubt” as an NFT, or non-fungible token. TMZ reports that Roc-A-Fella Records filed an unprecedented lawsuit against its co-founder for attempting to mint and sell the NFT without permission from the company. According to Page Six, attorney Alex Spiro filed new paperwork on behalf of the label Friday stating, “Dash had planned to sell at a SuperFarm Foundation online auction on Jun. 23… the copyright to Jay-Z’s album Reasonable Doubt, recognized as one of the greatest recordings in history.”

NFTs are often described as virtual trading cards, holding value for their digitally certified rare or one-of-a-kind status. However, NFT auction platform SuperFarm’s listing for the platinum album promised much more than bragging rights, “This marks a new milestone in the history of NFTs, entitling the new owner to future revenue generated by the unique asset….The newly minted NFT will prove ownership of the album’s copyright, transferring the rights to all future revenue generated by the album from Damon Dash to the auction winner.”

Roc-A-Fella already succeeded in shutting down next week’s sale, but also claim in the filing that “Dash is frantically scouting for another venue to make the sale….The sale of this irreplaceable asset must be stopped before it is too late, and Dash must be held accountable for his theft.” The album is a corporate asset that Dash shares equal ownership of with label co-founders Jay-Z and Kareem Burke.

Jay-Z is notoriously about his business when it comes to protecting ownership and controlling his image. This week he also sued photographer Jonathan Mannion., who shot the 1996 “Reasonable Doubt” album cover as well as other iconic images of Hov throughout the years. Although the images are Mannion’s creative work, the lawsuit asserts that the long-time collaborator had no right to use Jay-Z’s name or sell his image without permission. When asked to stop using these images, Mannion allegedly demanded millions of dollars in return.

It doesn’t matter if you were with Jay-Z shooting in the gym. He’ll see you in court!

From Grieving To Beefing: DMX’s Family Feuds Over Estate Worth Less Than $1 Million

That’s a damn shame…

10th Annual ONE Musicfest

You can’t put a price on what friends and family lost when hip hop legend Earl Simmons passed away, but a battle is brewing over what he left behind. At the time of his sudden death in April, the rapper known as DMX had been engaged to Desiree Lindstrom since 2019. She is the mother of his 5-year-old son Exodus and according to Page Six, she recently applied to be legally declared DMX’s common-law wife. A judge denied the request, which might have secured her more control over the rapper’s assets and future earnings than his 15 children. Five of his adult children were already fighting amongst themselves in court since May, just a few weeks after the funeral.

DMX did not have a written will or established estate. His daughters Sasha Simmons and Jada Oden petitioned the court to become administrators of his estate. Shortly after that his sons Xavier, Tacoma, and Sean Simmons petitioned the court separately to be the estate administrators instead. Despite the Ruff Ryders rapper’s incredible career including 20 movies and more than 74 million records sold, the sons’ filing estimates the estate is worth less than $1 million and the daughters estimated less than $50,000.

In addition to financial struggles from decades of drug addiction and supporting 15 children in 9 households, the IRS reportedly imposed a tax lien on DMX for $663,554.55 and in 2018 he was convicted for $1.7 million of tax fraud. Millions of mourning fans streaming classic DMX albums and new posthumously released album Exodus may provide a much-needed financial boost as the legal fight continues.

A judge will review the rivaling petitions and determine the estate administrators on July 15.

Between prowling for that baller schlong and biting styles, Ciara sure has been busy these days. But, recently she has been drawing comparisons to Rihanna bleach blonde new look.

Via Hellobeautiful:

Ciara’s been known to swagger jack the looks of her more talented counterparts and with the tweeting of her newest (pushed over to the side) look, I’m convinced that she’s biting on Rihanna’s black and blonde style.

However, Rihanna is indeed a trendsetter and could just be setting the tone for summer hair with her blond ambition. Nah–Ciara’s biting. If only she spent as much energy as she spends on her hair on her career and she could actually rival Rihanna.

We have to credit Ciara for at least hooking up her new growth, cuz RihRih’s roots seem like they have nowhere to hide under her wigpiece. Who do you think rocks the locks better?

Is Nicki Squashing ALL Of The Competition, Or Could Ke$ha Be A Problem???

$
0
0

Ebony Magazine did a six page spread on woman of the week Nicki Minaj that includes Derek Blanks photos of the rapper as a 50-foot-woman, towering over her surroundings. It’s a fitting metaphor, but not all the critics have been so kind to Nick.

The New York Times ran a critical review today comparing Minaj to Ke$ha and we’re guessing some people are not going to be too happy about it. Check out a few excerpts below:

At this time last year Nicki Minaj had established herself as the most important new female voice in hip-hop since Missy Elliott and was on her way to becoming one of the most ubiquitous artists in pop, thanks to a series of scene-stealing collaborations, high on character, technique and energy. For more than a year now, she has been a rejoinder to an endless stream of lovermen, narcissists, tough guys and lyrical monsters, besting them all, from Trey Songz to Kanye West.

So it’s odd that upon the release of her proper debut album, “Pink Friday” (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal), she has been bested in some ways by Kesha, who at this time last year was just beginning to figure out how to rap. Kesha released “Cannibal” (Kemosabe/RCA) this week, an EP that continues her move away from pop singer headlong into the sort of bubblegum-snapping slick talk that she has all but cornered the market on. Compared to her debut, “Animal,” which was released in January, “Cannibal” is riskier, narrower and more successful.

NYTimes writer Jon Caramanica is pretty hard on Pink Friday, claiming the project falls short of our expectations of Nicki:

Gone is much of the attitude and exuberance of her guest appearances, replaced with what can only be described as a sense of purpose, something she has never before been burdened by.

AND

Too often — “Fly,” “Save Me,” “Here I Am” — she turns maudlin, as if in search of an Oprah couch. Worse, these songs don’t take advantage of her natural gifts as a vocalist: there’s no element of surprise, no unusual vocal tics, no sense of theater, only melodrama.

He does heap some praise on “Roman’s Revenge,” noting:

These are the expectation-bending rhymes that have made Nicki Minaj the most dangerous rapper to share a song with, and here, even Eminem sounds hungry, wanting to keep up. But that attitude is too scarce on this album, as if now, no longer having to make an impression loudly, she’s unsure of what to say, and how to say it.

Then begins the comparisons between Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha… At first it seems that Nicki is at an advantage,

“Still, even at her dullest, Nicki Minaj is more technically gifted, more thoughtful and more radical than Kesha,”

But mid-sentence he twists the knife by continuing:

which makes it somewhat maddening that, with “Cannibal,” Kesha threatens to become the most influential female rapper of the day, or at least the most popular.

We’ve never been among the believers in Ke$ha as a “rapper” but Caramanica makes the argument she is one:

Pretending Kesha isn’t a rapper is no longer feasible. She’s primarily singing on only two songs here, “The Harold Song” and “C U Next Tuesday.” In the past she was accused of appropriating the style of the white-girl hipster-rap curio Uffie, but here, on songs like “Carnival” and “Crazy Beautiful Life,” she might be channeling Kid Sister, or more to the point, they’re both channeling L’Trimm, all sneering saucy talk.

Nevertheless, Kesha’s album has the sound of an artist loosening up to fully inhabit a new creative space, while Nicki Minaj’s reflects the pressure — self-imposed or otherwise — associated with the weight of expectation and moral authority. And while Nicki Minaj frets, Kesha feels more unbound then ever, free to do stupid things, smartly.

Both Nicki and Ke$ha worked with Atlanta producer Bangladesh (Nicki on “Did It On’em,” Ke$ha on “Sleazy”) so the next comparison focuses on those efforts, specifically in their different takes on gender roles. Nicki also seems to come out on top in this battle, with Caramanica conceding “Kesha has lower aims, and even less idea of how to achieve them,” and “For her, gender roles are fixed. Her transgressions aren’t subversive, just familiar frat humor coming from a woman’s mouth.”

Finally Caramanica concludes:

Nicki Minaj’s and Kesha’s audiences couldn’t be more different. Same goes for their styles. That there’s overlap between the two turns out to be the biggest surprise. There’s one outright Kesha-like song on Nicki Minaj’s album: “Check It Out,” produced by will.i.am, on which her vocals are run through a tinny Auto-Tune-like effect. “Competition/Why, yes/I would love some,” she says. Of course she has none in hip-hop — maybe she should be looking elsewhere anyhow.

The closing sentence actually does seem fitting. While the public has largely been focused on competition between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim — Nicki’s audience and her willingness to sing and try a more mainstream/pop approach makes for a good argument for a Ke$ha rivalry.

What do you think? Is Ke$ha any competition for Nicki Minaj?

After all the dust settled, all the sh*t-talk ceased, and all the fans stopped screaming, only 2 remain. The Packers and the Steelers will represent the NFC and AFC respectively in Superbowl XLV.

Ben Roethlisberger knelt on the turf and buried his head in an AFC championship shirt.

“I’m going to enjoy this,” he later said.
No one had to ask what he meant.
A season that began with a four-game suspension is one win away from giving him a third Super Bowl victory….

“Shoot, any time you get to the Super Bowl, it feels good,” he said. “I don’t care what you’re going through or what’s going on. We put a lot of stuff behind us early and found a way.”

Translation: I’m happy as HELL that we settled out of court and ol’ girl couldn’t press charges against me for choppin’ down that azz in the bathroom!

On the Packers side of things:

There was one Monster of the Midway in the NFC championship game and his name was Aaron Rodgers(notes).

He wasn’t even at his best and, still, he was better than the first, the second and the third quarterback used in vain by the Chicago Bears against their bitter rivals.

Rodgers ran for a score and made a TD-saving tackle in leading the Green Bay Packers into the Super Bowl with a bone-jarring 21-14 victory Sunday over Chicago.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Rodgers said. “I’m at a loss for words.”

When Donald Trump toyed with the idea of running for President, he sure stirred the pot with the tea baggers by playing on their birther conspiracy theories. After the then presidential hopeful launched a full-scale investigation in Hawaii and found nothing, Obama released the long-form of his birth certificate and silenced the madness – which, ultimately, led to Trump’s withdraw from the presidential run. Well, in another stroke of genius, the Obama 2012 Campaign team has just launched a line of t-shirts and coffee mugs that boast of the President’s U.S. citizenship.

In a email to supporters, the Obama campaign team has announced a few additions to its web site. For $25, you can now buy an official T-shirt featuring the President’s likeness and the headline “Made in America.” And on the back? The long-form birth certificate. Yes, you can now proudly wear the very document that took away whatever was left of Donald Trump’s credibility.

If that’s not your thing, don’t worry. You can also buy the matching coffee mug for $15.

Very smart on the Obama team’s part! Not only do the t-shirts and mugs support his re-election campaign and domestic businesses, they also send a message: hi hater!

Pictures from Beyoncé’s Renaissance  World Tour are all over social media, especially the new outfits she unveiled for the U.S. cities. In New Jersey, she and Blue Ivy were twinning in sequined orange, blue, and white Ivy Park jerseys with camo details. Bey completed her look with an oversized, super wide-brimmed hat in chrome. And, for some reason, Erykah took that personally.

“I’m flattered,” Erykah wrote on Bey’s post of the obvious Renaissance-era update of the iconic “Formation” reference.

One thing about the comments, they were not on her side:

“GIRL BEYONCÉ AINT TRYNA BE SH*T LIKE YOU. PLEASE TAKE SEVERAL FAWKING SEATS,” one reply said.

“girl I hope you know Beyoncé has been wearing these hats since 2016,” someone pointed out.

“girl relax tf .. spiritual for nothin if ur ego making u act this way lady.

The “Green Eyes” energy continued on Erykah’s own page. In her Instagram Stories, Erykah reposted Bey and a picture of herself in a giant silver hat for social media’s favorite game: “Let’s Compare!” It’s not like that usually backfires or anything.
